Rivanna Report

The Carter Barn Complex: Phase I and II Archaeological Investigations

This report of findings represents a cumulative two-year effort to archaeologically investigate the Carter Barn complex, a nineteenth to twentieth century cluster of agricultural structures within a walled compound southeast of the main Oatlands residence. The complex was originally constructed in the first quarter of the nineteenth century by George Carter to support his Oatlands plantation. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the Eustis family operated a dairy farm.
