The Carter family owned the property until 1897 when it was sold out of the family. The second generation of Carters moved out of the Oatlands mansion and into Little Oatlands across the field. It’s possible the Carter name on the Garden Shed wall is that of a descendant who worked here during the Eustis family’s ownership.
The 1930 census lists Henry B. Carter (age 42), his wife, Lucy, and their family living on or near the Oatlands property. It is possible that the name on the wall is that of Henry. It is not known if he is directly related to the George Carters who owned Oatlands.
