Richard has been a gardener at Oatlands since April 2, 1997. He signed his name next to his brothers-in-law, the Youngs. Richard moved to Loudoun County from Gainesville, Virginia in the late 1940s. He went to school with his wife’s brother, Edgar Young, and met his wife, Edith Young, during afternoon activities at school.
Richard enjoys all areas of the garden but he is particularly fond of the English Oak tree and the bowling green looking from the Tea House to the Reflecting Pool. He graduated from Douglass High School in Leesburg in 1953. Richard is active in the Loudoun/Douglass Alumni Association and serves as the president of the Association’s Bernice Sewell Carroll Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the woman who taught at the school in the late 1940s to mid-1950s.
