Pausing to remember the Emacipation ProclamationOn the 150th anniversary of the announcement of Emancipation to the Citizens of Loudoun County, the Loudoun Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee will hold a special program on Saturday, January 5, at Oatlands. The program is free and will begin at 4 PM in the Carriage House. Part of the program will include outdoor walking.
Oatlands is significant in this observance because it was the largest slave owning property in Loudoun County at the start of the Civil War. The 1860 census lists 128 enslaved African Americans at Oatlands.
The commemoration will include a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by Reverend Reginald A. Early, President of the Loudoun branch of the NAACP. Interpretations of contemporary events will be presented by local historians, such as Lincoln's signing of the document and Union General Milroy's distribution of the Proclamation in counties to Loudoun's west. Kevin Grigsby, Loudoun historian, author, and Oatlands slave descendant will offer his thoughts. Richard Moore, Oatlands gardener, will lead the group in the singing of a hymn. Guests will also have the chance to offer their thoughts on what the Emancipation Proclamation means to them.
